History

Imam al-Busiri عليه الرحمة composed Qasidat al-Burdah after suffering a paralysing stroke that left half of his body immobile. With deep sincerity, he wrote this Qasidah in praise of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, pouring out his love and repentance.

That night, he saw the Beloved Prophet ﷺ in a blessed dream — the Prophet ﷺ placed His noble hand upon the Imam’s body and covered him with His sacred shawl (burdah). Upon awakening, Imam al-Busiri found himself miraculously cured, able to move freely once again.

When he stepped outside the next morning, a dervish (holy man) — a stranger to him — asked him to recite the Qasidah he had presented before the Prophet ﷺ the previous night. Astonished, Imam al-Busiri realised that his dream had indeed been real, and that the poem had been accepted in the blessed court of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

From that day, the poem became known as “Qasidat al-Burdah” (The Poem of the Mantle) — a divinely inspired composition beloved by Muslims worldwide.

Significance

Over the centuries, The Burdah has been recited in mosques, homes, and gatherings of remembrance (majalis) across the globe. Its verses are memorised, inscribed on walls, and recited with love to invoke healing, blessings, and purification of the heart.

It is said that those who recite it with sincerity and love are granted spiritual comfort, protection from hardships, and nearness to the Prophet ﷺ.

So revered is this poem that during the Turkish reign, its verses were inscribed in beautiful calligraphy upon the domes of Masjid an-Nabawi ﷺ, where they remained until 1972.
