About The Author

Wali al-Dīn Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Khaṭīb al-Umari al-TabriziWali al-Dīn Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Khaṭīb al-Umari al-Tabrizi

Era: 14th century (d. 741 AH / 1340 CE)
Region: Tabriz (in today’s Iran) and wider Islamic scholarly world

Al-Khatib al-Tabrizi was a renowned Sunni scholar of hadith best known for compiling the celebrated collection Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ (“The Niche of Lamps”), an expanded and refined version of Masābīḥ al-Sunnah by al-Baghawi.

Rather than merely copying the earlier work, he added thousands of additional narrations, organized the material according to jurisprudential topics, and included clear citations of original sources, making the text more usable and accessible for students and teachers of hadith science.

His exact personal life and training details are largely lost to history, but surviving manuscript colophons show he completed Mishkāt in Ramadan 737 AH (1337 CE), and subsequent biographers place his death around 741 AH (1340 CE).

Al-Tabrizi’s work has been widely studied and transmitted in the Muslim world for centuries and remains a staple in traditional Islamic curricula, valued for its clarity, structure, and scholarly rigor.

He also studied under scholars of al-Haramayn and was known for his unwavering adherence to the Sunnah, humility, and piety. His Mazahir-e-Haq remains one of the most reliable and widely accepted commentaries in the Subcontinent.

This English rendering by Rafiq Abdur Rahman provides clarity, depth, and scholarly insight — making complex discussions accessible without compromising authenticity.
