It is said that he authored Usul ush-Shashi at the age of fifty, originally calling it Kitab al-Khamsin (“The Book of Fifty”). For centuries, it has remained a foundational text in the Dars-e-Nizami syllabus, serving as the first introduction to Usul al-Fiqh for students of traditional Islamic sciences. A Legacy of Knowledge and Service

Mufti Afzal Hoosen Elias was born in September 1955 (Muharram 1375) in Estcourt, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. From an early age, he was blessed with a deep yearning for sacred knowledge. After completing his secular education, he pursued higher Islamic studies at Darul Uloom Deoband, India, earning his Fazil Alim Certificate (1983) and later, his Mufti Certificate in Islamic Jurisprudence (1984). He also completed a specialized course in Tafseer under the esteemed Moulana Ghulamullaah Khan in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

His Works and Contributions

Throughout his life, Mufti Elias dedicated himself to making Deen accessible, practical, and relevant to Muslims in every corner of the world. He wrote, translated, and simplified Islamic texts—many of which have been translated into Afrikaans, Zulu, Sotho, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, Danish, and even Braille—making authentic Islamic knowledge widely available.
