Arabic From The Beginning Part 1 (One)

The purpose of this book is to set students on the road to learning Modern Standard Arabic by equipping them with all the skills they need to read and write vowelised Arabic texts. By the end of the book students should be able to:

  • IIdentify all the letters of the Arabic alphabet in their isolate and joined forms
  • Know the difference between the long and short vowel sounds and how to read them, including the diphthongs ‘-ay’ and ‘-ow’
  • Read the tanween word endings
  • Understand the roles of sukoon and shadda
  • Read words containing a hamza, no matter its position within a word
  • Recognise the alif al-maqsura
  • Identify the sun and moon letters and understand their effect on the pronunciation of words defined by ‘al-’
  • Read fully vowelised Arabic text

Although this work is primarily intended for classroom use, it is also well-suited to self-taught learners. To this end, an audio CD recording of all the materials in the book will be made available to help foster good pronunciation. This workbook assumes no prior knowledge of Arabic whatsoever. Clear, simple explanations introduce each new topic, supported by a wealth of exercises and activities, thereby helping to reinforce the learning process and to ensure rapid progression. The use of colour coding to highlight each point under discussion, as well as the inclusion of quality colour illustrations, serve to enhance the learning experience. The materials included offer extensive reading and writing practice as well as the opportunity for dictation exercises as a means of monitoring the learners’ progress. By the end of the book, students should be sufficiently competent in reading and writing the Arabic script to be able to progress to part two of the series in which they will start to learn Arabic grammar and vocabulary; read and construct sentences with understanding; and begin speaking this important international language.

Arabic From The Beginning (Part One) This work is the third in the series to help English speaking Muslims learn how to recite the surahs of the Quran. This volume covers the surahs of the 28th, 29th or 30th parts The text is transliterated in an easy to follow method, and is accompanied side by side by the Quranic (Arabic) text. It also contains an updated edited version of the translation of the meaning of these surahs in modern Standard English, based upon the translation of the meaning of the Quran of the late Abdullah Yusef Ali.

About The Author

Dr Imran Hamza Alawiye

Dr Imran Hamza Alawiye was born in the city of Ogbomosho in Western Nigeria where I completed my primary and secondary education but have lived abroad for more than forty years. Having brought up two children of his own and watched them flourish under the UK educational system, he has come to recognise just how fortunate they were in having access to modern classrooms, up-to-date textbooks, well-equipped laboratories, state-of-the-art whiteboards, computer suites, libraries, sports facilities and more during their schooling.

The story in his home city could not be in greater contrast, as he saw on a previous visit. The students have a real thirst for learning and the staff are incredibly dedicated to delivering a solid education, but they are terribly hampered by a lack of adequate buildings, classroom furniture, textbooks, science equipment and other basic resources to make their efforts effective.

Dr Imran Hamza Alawiye took it upon himself that when he returned to Britain he should actively campaign on their behalf to lend them a helping hand. For he believes that education is the passport for them to access a first world education while remaining in Nigeria. He immediately contacted some UK schools and was impressed with the response he received. To date, I have personally gathered and shipped over 65,000 donated textbooks, old still-usable science equipment that schools were replacing, as well as books to establish a library. But it became clear to him that his personal efforts were but a drop in the ocean of need.

For this reason, he established the charity Helping Hands for Education (HHE). His wife and other trustees came together to support his humble efforts, initially with the idea of targeting the schools in Ogbomosho, though hopefully expanding further afield in the long term.
