Hadrat Mawlana Hakim Muhammad Akhtar 

Hakim Muhammad Akhtar (1928 – 2 June 2013), a distinguished Pakistani Sunni Muslim scholar, poet, philanthropist, and Sufi mentor, left an indelible mark on Islamic scholarship and spiritual guidance. Born in Pratapgarh in 1928, he embarked on a journey of knowledge and spirituality that would define his legacy.

Educated at the State Unani Medical College in Allahabad, where he studied under the guidance of Hakim Ahmad Usmani, Akhtar demonstrated a keen interest in Islamic sciences. He furthered his education at the Madrasa Bait-ul-Uloom in Sarai Mir, completing the traditional dars-e-nizami in four years. Under the tutelage of Abdul Ghani Phulpuri, a student of Majid Ali Jaunpuri, Akhtar delved into the study of the Sihah Sittah, fostering a deep connection with Sufism.

The spiritual journey of Hakeem Muhammad Akhtar led him to esteemed mentors, including Abdul Ghani Phulpuri, Abrarul Haq Haqqi, and Muhammad Ahmad Pratapgarhi. Authorized in the Ashrafia, Chistiyyah, Naqshbandiyah, Qadiriyyah, and Suhrawardiyya orders of Sufism by Haqqi, Akhtar carried the torch of spiritual enlightenment.

In 1960, Akhtar migrated to Pakistan with his Sufi mentor Abdul Ghani Phulpuri. Following the wishes of Abrarul Haq Haqqi, he established the "Khanqāh Imdādiya Ashrafiya" in Karachi in 1980, a spiritual center that later expanded its reach to Bangladesh, India, Kenya, Mauritius, Myanmar, Réunion, South Africa, and Turkey.

A significant milestone in Akhtar's contributions to Islamic education was the establishment of the Jamiah Ashraful Madāris in Gulistan-e-Johar, Karachi, in 1998. This renowned seminary stands as a testament to his commitment to nurturing the next generation of scholars.

On 2 June 2013, Hakim Muhammad Akhtar departed from this world in Karachi. His funeral, led by his son Hakeem Muḥammad Mazhar, was attended by prominent scholars, including Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, Aurangzaib Farooqi, Mufti Muhammad Naeem, Muhammad Rafi Usmani, Saleemullah Khan, and Zar Wali Khan.

Hakeem Muhammad Akhtar's literary legacy encompasses profound works such as "Ma'ārif-e-Masnawi," a commentary on the Masnavi of Rumi, praised by scholars like Yousuf Banuri, Muhammad Zakariyya Kandhlawi, and Manzoor Nomani. His other notable works include "Lessons on the Mathnawi of Moulana Rumi: on love and recognition," "Tajalliat-E-Jazb: manifestation of Allah's attraction," "Ma'rifat-e-Ilāhiya," "Rūh ki bīmāriyān aur unka ilāj," and "Faizān-e-Muḥabbat."

Notably, he holds ijazah with isnad in several books of ahadith, including the esteemed Sihhah Sittah, having acquired them from renowned scholars like Mufti Taqi Usmani and Maulana Salimullah Khan.

Having completed the esteemed dars nizami curriculum and earning the shahadah alimiyya, Shaykh Tameem delved into the Islamic Spiritual Sciences of the Heart under the guidance of a venerable Spiritual Master. Focused on tazkiyah & tarbiyah (Purification of the Heart), he was granted authorization to teach and transmit this sacred knowledge.

Returning to the Bay Area at the counsel of his Shaykh, Shaykh Tameem has since dedicated himself to serving the community. He currently imparts his wealth of knowledge through classes on Tafsir, Hadith, Fiqh, Aqidah, Tazkiya, and Arabic Grammar. A sought-after lecturer in various Masajid and Halaqahs throughout Northern California, Shaykh Tameem is a beacon of enlightenment.

Beyond teaching, Shaykh Tameem is an accomplished translator, having translated numerous booklets and articles. His literary endeavors continue to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge. Fluent in Arabic, Farsi, Urdu, and English, he bridges linguistic gaps to make profound teachings accessible to all.
