Illuminating the Darkness Blacks and North Africans in Islam

Illuminating the Darkness is about the status of blacks and North Africans in Islam.

The book is divided into two sections:

Part l of the book explores the concept of race, 'blackness', slavery, interracial marriage and racism in Islam in the light of the Qur'an, Hadith and early historical sources.

Part ll of the book consists of a compilation of short biographies of noble black and North African Muslim men and women in Islamic history including Prophets, Companions of the Prophet ﷺ and more recent historical figures.

The reader is given a fascinating glimpse into the lives of truly noble characters, from luminous scholars to leaders of whole African civilisations.

The reader needs no other discrimination while reading this book than the one the author strives to make clear throughout: The Din of Islam is not only free of racism but is utterly opposed to it as the most aberrant form of jahiliyyah (ignorance).

About The Author

Habeeb Akande

Dr. Ghulam Mustafa Khan was well known as a pioneer of Islamic medical work of recent times. Originally from the Indian Subcontinent, Dr Khan grew up in Kenya and after graduation came to the UK. He worked as a GP in the UK, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. While in the UK, he founded the Islamic Medical Association (IMA) of UK in 1967. In the 1970s he emigrated to Nigeria where he was engaged in the setting up of an integrated community development complex in Angkpa, which would include a medical clinic, a mosque and a school. Moreover, during his stay there, Dr. Khan played a key role in establishing the IMA in Nigeria. In 1981 representing IMA Nigeria Dr. Khan was one of the founders of the Federation of Islamic Medical Associations (meeting held in USA), a body that now has 36 members across all the continents of the world. Upon return to UK, Dr Khan focused on reorganising the IMA UK. His strategy was based on pure dedication to Islamic principles to which he remained steadfast till his end.
