She Wore Red Trainers

An emotional romance that explores the possibilities and passions young Muslims face when falling in love.

When Ali first meets Amirah, he notices everything about her, her hijab, her long eyelashes and her red trainers in the time it takes to have one look, before lowering his gaze. And, although Ali is still coming to terms with the loss of his mother and exploring his identity as a Muslim, and although Amirah has sworn never to get married, they can't stop thinking about each other.

Can Ali and Amirah ever have a halal happily ever after.

"Robert's poetic style is captivating."—School Library Journal, on Ramadan Moon

"Alternating between Amirah and Ali's perspectives, Robert (Black Sheep) teases out the subtleties of young romance and the confounding pull of mutual attraction... it speaks vividly to conflicts of freedom, temptation, and faith. – Publishers Weekly

"Robert has painted a rich, varied picture of contemporary practicing Muslim teens... she succeeds in demonstrating the myriad ways many teens can live how they want while keeping halal" - Booklist

"a stunning novel of young romance" – Dolphin Book Blog

"Difficult as it is for non-Muslim teenagers to come to terms with semi-arranged marriage at 18 or 19, this compelling novel makes sense of it... a gentle, sensitive well paced love story, and I learnt a huge amount about Islam, which is, of course, a loving, caring, thoughtful way of life for the vast majority of its adherents." - The Independent, review by Susan Elkin

"faith and responsibility are sensitively explored... a well written and constructed story" - School Library Association

Listed in TES' Best "Books to Diversify Your Classroom" 2016 — Karen Sands-O’Connor, TES

“A reaffirmation of faith winning over negative values” — Kitaab.org
