What unfolded in the Iberian Peninsula between 711 and 1609 is a tale of profound fascination. It witnessed both a remarkable illumination and periods of profound darkness, where immense wisdom and profound ignorance coexisted.
Intriguingly, one of the meanings of 'Andalus' in Arabic is 'to become so smooth and shiny with age that it slips through your fingers.' This definition encapsulates the essence of what transpired in the region, not just once, but repeatedly throughout history.
"The Presence of Islam in Andalus" delves deep into this historical narrative, shedding light not only on that extraordinary era but also on the development of Christianity in Europe. It's only within this broader context that readers can gain a comprehensive understanding of how the inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula embraced Islam so readily and rapidly in the eighth century CE. Simultaneously, it unveils the somber chapters in history where the Jewish and Muslim communities of Spain and Portugal in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries CE faced the harsh fate of either extermination by the Spanish Inquisition or the dire necessity to flee for their lives.
