"This is a work of love as well, and is the author's ninth generation list of Companions settled in Makkah or Kufah.
"In fact, this is one of the best collections of biographical data on early Muslims from 764-850 CE."
(The Muslim World Book Review)
The Kitab at-Tabaqat al-Kabir by Abu 'Abdullah Muhammad ibn Sa'd is one of the most important and earliest surviving collections of biographical details of the early Muslims, spanning just over the first two centuries of Islam.
It is a rich storehouse of information compiled from all the sources available to Ibn Sa'd, as a result of which, the reader is given a vivid insight into the lives of the early Muslims and how extraordinary they were.
The scope of Ibn Sa'd covers the time of the Rashidun khalifs, the Umayyads and the 'Abbasids.
This sixth volume of the Tabaqat (Volume VI) deals firstly with the scholars of Makka, Ta'if, Yemen, Yamama and Bahrayn and then the bulk of the book is devoted to the scholars of Kufa.
Ibn Sa'd (148 AH/764 CE to 230 AH/844 CE) was born in Basra, but moved to Baghdad, where he studied under various people, including al-Waqidi. He also visited Kufa and Madina in his quest for knowledge and many authorities have tested his reliability.
Aisha Bewley is one of today's most prolific translators of classical Arabic works into English. She is not only learned in the Arabic language, but also well versed in the basic meanings and nature of the teachings and history of Islam. Being herself a Muslim, her knowledge is born of experience and direct transmission, not simply academic theory and learning by rote. For more than twenty-five years she has been concerned with making the contents of many classical works in Arabic more accessible to English-speaking readers for the first time, including Al-Muwatta' of Imam Malik (Madinah Press, 1991) and the Tabaqat of Ibn Sa'ad series of books, published by Ta-Ha Publishers Ltd.
Ta-Ha Publishers Ltd. was established in 1400 AH/1980 CE when our first small book was published. Since that time, we have been responsible for over 250 publications, some 150 of which are currently in print and distributed worldwide.
Our titles range from recent translations of early classical works by Muslim scholars to more modern issues tackled by contemporary authors. In fact, there is something for Muslims and non-Muslims of every age.
It has always been and continues to be the aim of Ta-Ha Publishers to assist in making the teachings of Islam more readily available and accessible for everyone.
