Also, it is wrong to think that the struggle ends just with Nafs al Ammara. Al Ammara is when the Self doesn't care about right and wrong. The next is Lawwama when the Self starts caring about right and wrong and tries to do the right thing. The next is Mulhima when the Self starts receiving inspirations (ilhaam from which Mulhima comes) from the Lord Almighty. However, the inspirations may as well be from Satan and we may not be able to differentiate between them. Only someone who has already traversed this path can warn us of its dangers and how to avoid them. The next is Mutmainna, which is the place of peace. This is the only stage when the danger of being pulled back into the abyss of desires is reduced to manageable proportions. Any place before this is still fraught with danger.
