Meet Shaykh ‘Abd al-Hafīz al-Makki (RA): A Beacon of Spiritual Light

In the luminous tapestry of Islamic scholarship and spirituality, Shaykh ‘Abd al-Hafīz al-Makki (RA) shines as a prominent figure, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of those fortunate enough to be touched by his teachings. Born in the sacred city of Amritsar, Punjab, in 1946 CE, Shaykh ‘Abd al-Hafīz al-Makki hails from a lineage deeply rooted in the acceptance of Islam, with a historical connection to the revered Sufi scholar Amir Kabir Sayyid ‘Ali al-Hamdani in Kashmir.

The tumultuous era of partition led his family to migrate to Faisalabad, Pakistan, where young Shaykh ‘Abd al-Hafīz al-Makki embarked on his educational journey, initially learning the Quran from his grandmother. The quest for knowledge took him to Makkah al-Mukarramah, where, under the guidance of Qari ‘Abd al-Rauf, he delved into the study of the Quran with Tajwid. His academic pursuits continued at Al-Madrasah al-Sawlatiyyah, shaping his understanding of both religious and secular education.

The turning point in Shaykh ‘Abd al-Hafīz al-Makki's life came when he heeded the call of Tabligh, spending a transformative year in the esteemed company of Amir of Tabligh, Hadhrat Ji Mawlana Yusuf al-Kandhalawi. This marked the beginning of a journey that would intertwine his destiny with the teachings of the great Mujaddid of Islam, Qutub al-Aqtab Hadhrat Shaykh al-Hadith Mawlana Muhammad Zakariyya al-Kandhalawi al-Muhajir al-Madani.

Under the tutelage of his beloved Shaykh, Shaykh ‘Abd al-Hafīz al-Makki immersed himself in the study of various branches of Islamic knowledge. His dedication earned him the distinction of becoming a Khalifah in the Chishti, Naqshbandi, Suharwardi, and Qadri Tariqahs at the tender age of twenty during a blessed ‘eitikaf at Mazahir al-‘Ulum’s Dar-e-Jadid Mosque on 27 Ramadan 1386AH/1966CE.

Remaining unwaveringly loyal to his Shaykh until Shaykh al-Hadith Mawlana Muhammad Zakariyya's passing in 1402AH/1982CE, Shaykh ‘Abd al-Hafīz al-Makki's activities, from lecturing on Hadith to global Tabligh missions, were infused with the blessings and instructions of his revered mentor.

After Shaykh al-Hadith's demise, Shaykh ‘Abd al-Hafīz al-Makki became a torchbearer of his spiritual and academic legacy. Establishing Al-Maktabah al-Imdadiyyah in Makkah al-Mukarramah and Al-Rashid Printing Press in Al-Madinah al-Munawwarah, he meticulously worked on publishing profound works such as the multi-voluminous commentary on Imam Bukhari’s Sahih titled Al-Kanz al-Mutawari.

A true global ambassador of Tasawwuf, Shaykh ‘Abd al-Hafīz al-Makki traverses continents, enlightening the Arab world and beyond about the scholarly efforts of the Akabir of Deoband. His tireless efforts in establishing organizations and nurturing individuals for service in various fields, including Dawah and Tabligh, reflect his commitment to elevating the banner of Islam.

Shaykh ‘Abd al-Hafīz al-Makki’s impact is evident in the multitude of murids and recipients of his Ijazah scattered across the Middle East, Pakistan, South Africa, the UK, India, Hijaz, Bangladesh, Nepal, and the West Indies. His regular visits to different parts of the world attract thousands seeking guidance, wisdom, and spiritual enlightenment.
