Remembering and mentioning the Prophet is not just a praiseworthy act but an obligation in Islam. Only through his remembrance does one truly get to know him and only after getting to know him can one realistically attempt to follow and love him.
This famous risala of Shaykh Ashraf Ali Thanvi attempts to fulfil this need of remembering and mentioning the Beloved Prophet by providing the reader with sound and authentic narrations of his virtues, excellence and particularities as well as accounts of key moments of his life, from his very creation to his life in the grave and ultimately his station in Allah’s Court and entering into Paradise.
It also describes the virtues of his father, grandfather and his family as well as his miracles and rights over his ummah. The risala then ends with a discussion of sending blessings upon him as well as taking his waseela in a supplication to Allah. The shaykh also reveals that this remembrance of the Prophet is a cure for all ills, whether worldly such as plague and inflation or spiritual such a sin and discord.
Thanvi sahib mentions a specific barakah of this risala, that since he began writing it his locality remained safe from the plague and ills ravaging all around him and he was convinced that wherever this risala went it would bring cure and relief.
The shaykh stresses that he was careful to only choose narrations that were authentic to allow and reassure the reader that this remembrance of the Prophet was taking place within the boundaries of Shariah.
Shaykh Ashraf Ali Thanvi was born in 1280 A.H. in the village of Thana Bowan. His desire for Deen was initiated by his initial ustad Maulana Fateh Muhammad Saheb. Commonly referred to as Hakim al-Ummat (‘Sage of the Ummah’), was a giant among the Islamic scholars of the twentieth century. He was a master in all branches of Islamic scholarship including the Qur’an, Hadith, Fiqh and Tasawwuf. A prolific writer, he had more than a thousand publications to his credit. He wrote for the minimally literate as effectively as he did for scholars. Nearly a century later some of his books remain as popular as they were when originally published.
Moulana’s Teachers were all great luminaries of their time. The most important amongst them was Moulana Muhammed Yaqub Saheb from whom he achieved the greatest amount of knowledge and spiritual benefit.
He learnt qiraat from the well-known Qari Muhammed Abdullah Saheb Muhajir Makki, during his student days in Deoband he desired to make a pledge on the hands of Moulana Rasheed Ahmed Gangohi but he ended becoming a disciple of Hajee Imadadullah.
