Mishkat al-Masabih is a selection of hadith compiled by Imam Waliuddin Abu Abdullah Mahmud Tabrizi. Imam Waliuddin Abu Abdullah Mahmud Tabrizi expanded on an earlier selection of hadith named Masabih as-Sunnah by Imam al-Baghawi. Mishkat al-Masabih contains approximately 6,000 hadith chosen from the Six Books, Musnad Ahmad, and various others. It is a comprehensive selection of hadith that covers almost all aspects of Islamic belief, jurisprudence (fiqh), and virtues.
The Mishkat al-Masabih of Imam Waliuddin Abu Abdullah Mahmud Tabrizi is a comprehensive book on hadith taught around the world to students of the subject, especially in the Subcontinent where it is studied before the six famous collections to be able to prepare for them.
Most of the hadith contained in it are from the Sihah Sitta [the six Authentic compilations of Hadith].
It contains 5945 aḥādīth divided into 29 chapters and is considered to be an important collection of aḥādīth by Sunni Islamic scholars.
Mirqat al-Mafatih by 'Ali ibn Sultan Muhammad al-Qari (d.1014/1605) is the most comprehensive and excellent Arabic commentary on Mishkat al-Masabih. He came to be popularly known as Mulla 'Ali al-Qari and belonged to the Hanafi School. He was born in Herat, Iran, where he received his basic Islamic education. Thereafter, he travelled to Makkah al-Mukarramah, Saudi Arabia, and studied under the celebrated scholar Shaykh Ahmad ibn Hajar Haythami Makki. Mulla 'Ali al-Qari eventually decided to remain in Makkah al-Mukarramah where he taught, died and was laid to rest.
It ought to be noted here that his commentary was the first one to have been written by a Hanafi scholar. In this commentary, the author touches upon the authenticity of the Ahadith based on the opinions of the early Hadith scholars. He also points out that since al-Tabrizi was a Shafi'i scholar he had restricted himself to include only those Ahadith which were important and relevant to legal deductions and teachings according to the Shafi'i School.
In this commentary, al-Qari refutes the Shafi'i juridical opinions and puts forth the Hanafi opinions. In certain instances, he questions whether the Ahadith were of weak (Dha'if) ranking or alternatively he gives his reasons as to why a particular Hadith cannot be accepted to be a source for a specific Shafi'i ruling. Thus, he added in his commentary such as Ahadith from which Hanafi legal deductions are made.
The Mishkat al Masabih has enjoyed wide popularity in the world of Islamic learning Since 516 AH when it was first compiled by Waliuddin Abu Abdullah Mahmud Al-Tabrizi.

Imām Tibrīzī rahimahullah was motivated by his teacher ʿAllāmah Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭībī rahimahullah to revise Imām Baghawī’s Maṣābīḥ in accordance with the scholars’ criticism. Hence, Imām Tibrīzī added a third faṣl (section) which consisted of āthār (from the ṣaḥābah and tābiʿūn) and other aḥādīth that he felt fit into the chapter and provided further clarification. Additionally, in his own words: “وما أشار إليه، رضي الله عنه، من غريب أو ضعيف، بيّنتُ وجهه” – Imām Tibrīzī rahimahullah expounded Imām Baghawī’s reasoning for the narrations he indicated as weak or strange.
The total number of aḥādīth in Maṣābīḥ was 4434. After the additions Imām Tibrīzī made, the number of aḥādīth in Mishkāt totalled 5945. Citing Tārīkh al-Ḥadīth, the author of Mirqāt al-Mafātīḥ mentions that the total number of chapters in Mishkāt are 29, the abwāb 327, and the fuṣūl 1038.
