The rich history of Deeni Madaris, dating back to the early days of Islam, finds its roots in the teachings of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Before the migration to Medina, Dar-ul-Arqam served as the focal point for Islamic education. Post-Hijrat, the construction of Masjid-e-Nabawi marked the establishment of the first Islamic teaching center, known as "Suffa," where students from distant areas sought knowledge.
Following the decline of the Mughal Empire, vigilant ulama in India embarked on a mission to establish Madaris in every city and village. These educational centers played a pivotal role in countering attacks from other missionaries and Aaryans, safeguarding the practice and propagation of Islam during challenging times.
Founded by Hazrat Moulana Ahmad Hasan Bham Simlaki RH in 1908 CE, Jamiah Islamiah Talimuddin emerged as a testament to the efforts of pious ulama. The backdrop of its establishment lies in the aftermath of the downfall of the Islamic sultanate in Gujarat, where darkness of ignorance prevailed. Hazrat Moulana Ahmad Hasan Bham Simlaki RH, deeply moved by the state of his native place, initiated the establishment of Talimuddin, a madrasa that flourished over time.
Hazrat Moulana Ahmad Hasan Bham (RH) hailed from the town of Simlak, characterized by his piety, benevolence, ambition, kindness, knowledge, generosity, sincerity, and high-level administrative capabilities. He stood among the intellectual luminaries of his era, with Allah Almighty guiding him to undertake significant endeavors from an early age.
Born in the year 1296 H (1878 CE) in the village of Simlak, Navsari taluka, Surat district, Gujarat State, his educational journey commenced under the guidance of Hazrat Moulana Ameeruddin Sahab Simlaki (RH) in his village. Progressing to Madrasa Anjuman-E-Islam Kathor, he studied Persian and early Arabic under the tutelage of Hazrat Moulana Abdul Haq Hazarwi (RH). For secondary education, he attended Madrasa Islamia Lajpur, studying under Hazrat Moulana Sufi Ahmed Miya Lajpuri (RH). Seeking higher studies, he ventured to Delhi, enrolling in Madrasa Hussain Baksh for a year, followed by two years at Madrasa Jamiah Uloom Kanpur founded by Hazrat Thanwi (RH). Due to a plague epidemic, he returned to Delhi, joining Madrasa Abdul Rub Delhi, where he studied Uloom-E-Aliya under the guidance of Hazrat Moulana Abdul Alaa Sahab Merathi (RH), a disciple of Hazrat Aqdas Nanotvi (RH). He completed his graduation from Madrasa Ameenia in Delhi at the age of 26, under the esteemed scholars Hazrat Moulana Ameenuddin Aurangabadi Sahab (RH) and Hazrat Mufti Kifayatullah Dehlavi (RH).
Post-graduation, he served as the first teacher at the Madrasa in Turawa, Surat. Subsequently, driven by the desire to eradicate innovations and non-religious customs among his fellow people, he returned to his native place. Imparting Islamic knowledge from his home, he witnessed a gradual increase in the number of students. To accommodate the growing student body, he relocated the Madrasa to the Masjid in Simlak, officially inaugurated as Talimuddin with the assistance of his teacher, Hazrat Moulana Sufi Ahmed Miya Lajpuri (RH), at the age of 31.
With dedication and hard work, the number of students, teachers, and staff increased. Within two years (1328 H), Simlak Masjid became inadequate, leading him to acquire land near Eidgah at the west side of Dabhel, with support from Navsari nayab subedar and renowned freedom fighter Hazrat Moulana Mohammed Ali Johar (RH) (died 1931 CE). Constructing a Masjid on the acquired land, he relocated the Madrasa to this new location.
Meeting the financial requirements for the Madrasa's day-to-day activities, including schooling and boarding, prompted him to travel to South Africa in the month of Rabi ul Awwal 1334 H (January 1916 CE). Engaging in religious activities, he laid the foundation of a Masjid in Franklin city and worked towards fostering unity among fellow Muslims. Establishing a committee for revenue generation among the residents of Dabhel proved beneficial for the Madrasa.
Moulana Bham (RH) was a dynamic and active figure who also founded a Madrasa in Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique. Unfortunately, as he completed his work in Mozambique, he fell ill with the deadly plague spreading in the region. At the age of 42, he passed away, attaining martyrdom and was laid to rest in Brampton, Johannesburg, South Africa. May Allah Almighty make his grave a place in the beds of heaven, showering him with the best of rewards. May Allah Almighty safeguard this institution from all conspiracies and temptations of the world. Aameen. His tenure in caring for the Madrasa lasted for a total of 10 years, 5 months, and 10 days.
With relentless effort, Madrasa Talimuddin progressed steadily. As student numbers increased, departments expanded, and a shift to a new location near Eidgah in Dabhel became necessary. The founder's dedication bore fruit, transforming the institution into an internationally renowned Islamic university.
Hazrat Moulana Ahmad Buzurg RH assumed leadership, infusing new energy into Jamiah Islamiah Talimuddin. Over his 21-year tenure, he focused on building and developing the madrasa. His efforts led to the invitation of eminent scholars, including Imam-ul-Asr Hazrat Moulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri RH, marking a significant turning point.
Jamiah Islamiah Talimuddin actively participated in the Dandi March and Bardoli Satyagraha during the independence movement. Mufti Ateeq-ur-Rehman Usmani's fatwa against the British government made a significant impact, showcasing the institution's commitment to social and political issues.
Jamiah Islamiah Talimuddin, rooted in the history of Deeni Madaris, stands as a beacon of Islamic education and social responsibility. From its humble beginnings to international acclaim, the institution continues its journey, guided by the Quran and Sunnah, contributing to the intellectual and moral development of its students and the broader Muslim community.
