The Islam Shop notices how many people face difficulties in deciding between perfume oil and a spray of their favourite scent. The questions that we normally receive range from, “Can I travel with this?”, “Which one is best to gift my husband”, “Which will last longer?” to “Which one is stronger?” For this reason, The Islam Shop has constructed the list below clarifying any questions and dismissing any myths on the difference between perfume oils and sprays.
By far the most popular type of perfume, the floral fragrance is a romantic, light and slightly sweet scent. These fabulous perfumes are a blend of flowers such as the rose, violet, lily, jasmine and lavender. Most men’s floral scents have orange blossom at their heart, giving an alluring tone.
As their name suggests the oriental perfumes originate from more exotic parts of the world. Made from spices such as pepper, cloves, cinnamon and vanilla, these fragrances are warm and sensual. There is also a certain depth to this scent that is quite popular with the more adventurous!
Largely favoured by men, the woody perfumes often have light top notes with a muskier heart. Made from Sandalwood, Patchouli and Oakmoss, these warm, dry and musky notes provide an air of sophistication and mystery to all who wear them. Women prefer the woody notes for evenings.
Commonly known as citrus or green notes, the fresh fragrances are often made from lemon, orange and bergamot; then accented with herbal notes to give that refreshing scent and revive the senses. These are a great choice for an uplifting springtime essence for both men and women.
The amount of solvent mixed with perfume oils determines how strong your fragrance is.
Perfume: 20% - 40% contains 20-40% of aromatic compounds and can last between 3-8 hours
Eau De Perfume: 10% - 30% contains 10-30% of aromatic compounds and can last between 4-6 hours.
Eau De Toilette: 5% - 20% contains 5-20% of aromatic compounds and can last between 4-6 hours.
Eau De Cologne: 2% - 3% Contains 2-3% aromatic compounds and can last between 1-4 hours.

An initial, lighter smell of fragrance that lasts around 8-15 minutes. Examples of these notes include citruses, powdery scents and light florals.
The main elements of the fragrance, these notes develop after the top note clears, usually around 30 minutes after being sprayed. Heart notes most often include heavier floral scents.
The last to develop and helps fix the fragrance to the skin. This is where you will smell the bolder notes of the scent, such as smokes and leathers which become more noticeable when the fragrance has been on the skin for a while.
Both the oil and the spray versions are created with the same fragrance formula, at the same high concentration, so in theory, they should smell the same. However, the alcohol in the sprays does make certain ingredients “pop” more or seem sharper, while the Perfume oil in the perfume oils softens certain ingredients. Ultimately, it comes down to your body chemistry, and how each version smells on your skin.
Yes. The oil develops very quickly on the skin revealing its main notes right away. It has a tendency to dampen the fresh, lighter top notes leading to a scent that is more constant. The alcohol in sprays evaporates different scent notes one at a time, starting with the top notes (usually citrus notes), then the heart notes, and finally the base notes, which linger the longest. We like to compare this to making a delicious meal vs. going to a restaurant and having a delicious meal. When you make a dish at home, you see, smell and experience all the different ingredients that go into making your special dish. Like a spray, you experience each note and essence individually. At a restaurant, you aren’t experiencing each ingredient separately, but as a whole, when it comes to you and you enjoy the blend of flavours with each bite.
Yes. The perfume oil remains very close to your skin. It is a much more intimate choice, perceptible only by those close to you. This is a great option for those in professions where the perfume needs to be subdued, such as nurses, teachers, and the like. It ils a great way to wear perfume without others knowing you are wearing perfume. The perfume spray is a much more noticeable choice. It leaves a trail of fragrance behind you, ideal for those who like to smell good, and love others to know it. The spray versions will most likely gain you compliment on your new perfume.
No, but there is a lot of conflict on this subject. Some people defend that because the oil version moisturises the skin it doesn’t fade as fast as the spray version would and therefore lasts longer. However, since the spray’s presence is more voluminous, some claim that the spray lasts longer. Ultimately, it comes down to your skin’s chemistry, and which lasts longer on you. Theoretically, because the perfume oils and sprays are made with the same concentration of perfume extract, they should last the same amount of time.
Fragrance is a highly personal product and it is important to match your personality and lifestyle to how you wear your fragrance.
