May Chang Oil

May Chang essential oil, also known as Litsea cubeba, is light yellow in colour with an intense, fresh, lemony, fruity aroma, which lightens into a sweeter, softer scent as the oil begins to evaporate.

As a uniquely uplifting, refreshing oil, it has a variety of indications, from combating fatigue and aiding concentration, through to easing anxiety, depression and indigestion!

Safety note: May Chang can be sensitizing to sensitive skins.

May Chang Essential Oil Has 3 Main Uses:-

As a nervous tonic for stress-related issues, this oil will help lighten the mood and calm anxiety. It is said to create a sense of inner lightness where negativity has set in. It is also excellent to help stimulate concentration where stress or anxiety has created a foggy mental state.

As a digestive tonic, particularly for those with sluggish digestion. May Chang is a mild stimulant – so it can be helpful where trapped wind (IBS symptoms) constipation or indigestion are concerned.

As an aid to those who suffer from excessive perspiration/body odour. This can occur during periods of high stress or hormonal changes such as puberty or menopause. Others just find they have a perpetual inclination towards sweaty feet, for example. May Chang can be particularly useful here alongside other oils such as Geranium, Tea Tree, Peppermint, Bergamot and Sandalwood

In Traditional Chinese Medicine the small fruit, from which the oil is extracted, is also used to help regulate blood pressure, although there is no research currently available to demonstrate that the essential oil may do the same.

Aromatherapy recipes using May Chang essential oil

Atmosphere Spray for Calm & Clarity

Mix 100ml Rose Hydrolat with 4 drops May Chang essential oil, 4 Rose, 4 Neroli and 20 Bergamot. Shake well before use.

Massage Oil for Calm & Clarity

Blend 30ml Sweet Almond oil with 2 drops May Chang, 2 Rose, 4 Bergamot and 6 Geranium.

Massage Oil for Indigestion

Mix 20ml Sweet Almond oil with 2 drops May Chang essential oil, 4 Sweet Orange and 2 Ginger. Massage into the tummy in a clockwise direction.

Refreshing Vaporising Blend for Dinner Parties

If you are hosting a dinner party, try vaporising this blend to freshen the atmosphere, lift the mood, encourage conversation and aid digestion! Use 3 drops May Chang, 3 Spearmint and 4 Sweet Orange.

Aromatherapy Bath for Nervous Perspiration

Mix 15ml SLS Free Bath & Shower Gel (or full-fat milk) with 2 drops May Chang, 4 Bergamot and 6 Geranium. Add to the bath once the water has run!

Foot Spritz for Sweaty Feet

Combine 120ml Orange Flower Hydrolat with 3 drops May Chang essential oil, 5 Sandalwood, 10 Bergamot and 15 Geranium.

Relaxing Aromatherapy Bath:

Blend 8 drops of May Chang (Litsea cubeba) essential oil, 4 drops of Neroli and 2 drops of Rose Otto with14ml of Sunflower oil. Run a bath of warm, not hot, water, add up to 5ml of the blended aromatherapy oils, agitate the water to mix, and relax for a minimum of twenty minutes. Avoid splashing the water in the eyes.

Diffuser Blend:

Blend 4 drops of May Chang (Litsea cubeba), 2 drops of Bergamot and 1 drop of Sandalwood and add to an aromatherapy diffuser or vaporiser. The aroma of the oils, when inhaled will have a positive effect on body systems as well as the mood and emotions.

Chest Rub for Minor Chest Ailments:

Blend 4 drops of May Chang (Litsea cubeba) essential oil, 2 drops of Ravensara and 1 drop of Cajeput in 14ml of fragrance-free Moisturising Lotion and apply to the chest and back twice a day.

Massage Cream for Stomach Pain:

Blend 5 drops of May Chang (Litsea cubeba) in 10ml of fragrance-free Moisturising Cream and massage into the tummy in a clockwise direction.

Aromatherapy Facial Oil for Oily & Acne Prone Skin:

Blend 4 drops of May Chang (Litsea cubeba), 1 drop of Lemon and 2 drops of Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica) in 28ml of Hazelnut oil and massage into the affected areas before going to bed.
